What Are Dust Mites?According to the
Clemson University Home and Garden Information
Center dust mites were first discovered in 1694 by the inventor
of the microscope, Anton van Leeuwenhoek. Now, more than 300 years later, There are two main types of dust mites found in North America. The American house dust mite and the European house dust mite. Dust mites are not considered insects, but they have been linked closely to the spider and tick families. Dust mites are very small in size and cannot be seen with the naked eye as they are only about 1/100 inch (.3mm) in length. Mites tend to flourish in humid environments. An RH% level of 70% and above is a prime living environment for mites. House dust mites nourish themselves by eating dead human skin as well as other bacteria in the air. The life span for a dust mite is very short. Most mites live about 1-3 months. Female mites produce 1-2 eggs ever day, and normally will lay about 50 eggs in a lifetime. A baby dust mite can grow into an adult in about 3 weeks (Texas A&M Extension).
