Where Do Dust Mites Live?

Dust mites thrive in the warm, humid conditions found in most houses houses (above 60%-65% RH).

Dust mites are generally found in the following type of environments:

Mattresses
Because most people spend nearly 1/3 of their time sleeping, a bed is a prime place for dust mites to live.  Dust mites like to live in a warm humid environment.  The fibers on your mattress and pillows tend to see high numbers of dust mites.

Couches and Recliners
Dust mites feed on dander (dead human skin as well as pet dander).  People are spending more and more time on couches and recliners, thus the amount of dander increases. Furry or cloth like upholstery will tend to have more dust mites than a leather upholstery.

Kids Toys
Your child's favorite toy might be a breeding ground for dust mites.  You should regularly place soft toys in the freezer for several hours before you wash them, or wash them in hot water.

Drapes and Curtains
Draperies are attractive to dust mites for many reasons.  One main reason is the warmth of the sunlight.  Curtains normally don't receive a lot of cleaning attention, therefore mites can live peacefully.

Carpets and Rugs
Shag Carpets and rugs often provide an ideal climate for dust mites.  Where possible, tile and wooden or laminate flooring should be used to help lessen the impact of dust mites.
